Our mission is to discover, develop, and deploy God-given gifts and talents. First in ourselves, then in those closest to us, and finally outward to the world.

Why Not was born from a simple question — what if everyday people chose to trust God more deeply, and let that change everything around them?

Candice Hilse, Executive Director

Agreements

“We believe there is one God in three distinct persons (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit), and each person is fully God. As believers in this, we have been called into fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ.

In His authority we place our trust, and in this trust, we operate as a unified body to bear with one another in living out and spreading the gospel wherever we go. Regardless of denominational creed or liturgical practice, we agree to bear with one another to see every life on this earth transformed by the gospel message.

Our symbol of the yellow cross is a testament to the belief that we can place our trust in Jesus and live and serve together to spread the good news and allow it to highlight and transform each and every one of us.”

Our Story

A Gospel-Rich Lifestyle

Why Not Charleston was launched through a distinct and uncommon framework: the Promise-Informed Mindset, founded by Kathy Lewis. This mindset became the originating logic model that shaped, guided, and gave rise to Why Not Charleston—forming an organization unlike others in its posture, practice, and outcomes.

At its core, Why Not Charleston begins with a simple but demanding conviction: light outshines the darkness, and the most faithful place to begin is not with what is broken, but with what God has already promised, preserved, and made present. The vision and outcome of this work is a Gospel Rich Lifestyle—a way of living where faith is embodied, love is visible, and hope is sustained across generations.

The Founder
& The Framework

IMG_9919.JPG

Kathy Lewis is the founder of the Promise-Informed Mindset, an appreciative inquiry model that begins with gratitude, discernment, and trust. Rather than leading with diagnosis or solutions, this framework asks different questions:

  • What has already been entrusted here?

  • What has endured?

  • What is alive and ready to be strengthened?

Under Kathy’s leadership, this mindset moved from theory to practice and launched Why Not Charleston as its primary expression. Her influence was not exercised through control or authorship of outcomes, but through stewardship—helping communities recognize their own God-given gifts, resilience, and capacity for renewal.

The Model: Appreciative & Surrendered

The Promise-Informed Mindset is an appreciative inquiry logic model that intentionally surrenders to the Word, the Way, and the Wonder of God. Scripture serves as the orienting truth that shapes how promise is recognized and honored, without being reduced to branding or strategy.

This model does not deny suffering, injustice, or historical complexity. It tells the truth about them—while refusing to let them define identity or future. By centering endurance, sacred resilience, and continuity, the framework uncovers opportunity often hidden by history, conditioning, or scarcity-based thinking.

The Outcome: A Gospel Rich Lifestyle

The intended and observable outcome of this model is a Gospel Rich Lifestyle. This is not a program, but a lived reality marked by:

  • Trust expressed through faithful action

  • Love made visible in everyday life

  • Generosity rooted in gratitude rather than scarcity

  • Hope carried forward across generations

This approach integrates spiritual wellness with mental, relational, and communal health, recognizing that renewal of the mind is both biblical and biological. Gratitude reshapes perception. Trust strengthens relationships. Hope restores imagination. Communities flourish when these are practiced together.

Multiplication & Influence

As Why Not Charleston enters a season of multiplication and influence, it continues to be guided by the Promise-Informed Mindset that launched it. While founded by Kathy Lewis, the framework itself is communal, transferable, and reproducible—designed to be practiced wherever people choose trust over fear, gratitude over scarcity, and obedience over certainty.

What makes Why Not Charleston unmatched is not scale or personality, but alignment: a founder whose leadership formed a faithful framework, a model that honors what already exists, and a clear outcome—a Gospel Rich Lifestyle—lived out together in trust, humility, and love made visible.
